The Orchard Family Story

In 2006, Grace Orchard came into the world under challenging circumstances. During her birth, complications arose, and she became stuck in the birth canal, resulting in a brain injury that led to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Despite these difficulties, Grace and her family have faced the journey with resilience, finding crucial support from Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) New York Metro.

Home away from home

For the past 17 years, the dad, Jason, mom Diedre, and brother have traveled from Ireland to the United States for Grace’s therapeutic treatment. These sessions, which last three weeks, are critical to Grace’s progress. Yet, what truly makes this journey possible is the steadfast presence of Ronald McDonald House.

Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park has been a home away from home for the Orchards, offering a comforting environment where the family can rest, recharge, and focus on Grace’s healing.

The Ronald McDonald House, located just steps away from Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, has amenities such as private bedrooms, private showers, warm meals daily, and on-site laundry to take care of the whole family. This ensures that the family can focus on what matters most – their children.

Taking Steps Forward

For Grace, the familiar and welcoming atmosphere has played an integral role in her development. After a day of therapy where she had just learned how to walk, Grace found the confidence and freedom to explore her new skill. Surrounded by a supportive community and in a space that felt like home, she took some of her first independent steps, setting the stage for greater achievements.

“She just learned to walk. She felt really comfortable here,” says Jason.

“It was a home away from home, an environment that she knew, comfortable. And she just took off. And from that time, you know, she’s always been walking.”

Since that life-changing moment, Grace’s mobility has blossomed. She has completed three five-kilometer charity walks alongside her father, defying expectations and proving the power of perseverance and support.

For families like the Orchards, RMHC NYM is so much more than just a place to stay during medical treatment. It’s a place where hope feels within reach. Through the comfort and community the House provides, it has become an essential part of Grace’s journey and countless others like hers.
